Dental aesthetics

  • Colour change in teeth can be accomplished by the application of veneers and dental crowns.

This treatment is of a permanent nature. It is recommended in cases of severe tooth-discoloration or when chemical whitening does not provide the desired results. Chemical whitening is performed by the means of peroxyde preparations of different concentrations. We distinguish two procedures: the so called »in office bleaching«, meaning that the teeth are bleached in the dental office, and »walking bleaching«, denoting the procedure of bleaching one's teeth at home.

Before the bleaching can be performed, it is necessary to examine the teeth in detail, especially the ones containing fillings. Outworn fillings must be replaced. If they are not properly sealed, the whitening agent can accumulate in the cracks and cause pain. It is necessary to eliminate tartar and soft dental plaque as well as polish the teeth.

When teeth-whitening is performed in the dental office, the gums are protected with a rubber shield or protective gel, while the dentist applies a whitening product to the teeth. The whitening takes an hour, although the time of the procedure can be shortened by warming the whitening agent. The latter is then rinsed off the teeth and the session is completed. If the aspired to colour-change is not achieved, the procedure is repeated. Due to the high concentration of peroxyde contained in the whitening agent, it is possible for some complications to occur. The teeth can show signs of oversensitivity and the gums can be injured. The gums heal and the teeth have to be treated with appropriate tooth pastes and coatings. A more serious complication caused by high-concentration peroxyde is a bone-injury. The bone and tooth can overgrow each other, which can result in tooth-resorption. At-home whitening requires two dental visits. First, the teeth are imprinted. The dental technician fabricates a suitable teeth-whitening support based on the model. This support is used by the patient to apply the whitening agent, wearing it each day at an appointed time. The duration of this treatment depends on the peroxyde-concentration and the target colour-shade, though it usually does not take more than seven days. Complications are rarer than with in-office treatment. During and after the treatment, the patient is required to use a paste for sensitive teeth. Coffee, red whine and similarly strong-coloured products are to be avoided.

After the whitening, it is necessary to replace the fillings situated in the visible part of the dentition due to colour imbalance. Teeth whitening is a reversible process. Eventually, the teeth are discoloured again to a darker colour-shade. When that happens, the procedure has to be repeated, although in a smaller extent.
  • Porcelain veneers are suitable for an aesthetic and party functional correction of the frontal surface of the visible teeth. The tooth is grinded to a small extent, with the chipped off enamel being replaced by a porcelain veneer, which is glued to the tooth. The other tooth- surfaces stay untouched. Veneers are the best option, considering the aesthetic value and minimal loss of tooth-substance. We can permanently change the shape, slope, rotation and colour of living teeth. They are also highly recommended for frontal teeth, which have been subjected to strong dental restorations with fillings. Inanimate teeth are treatable with dental crowns.
  • The beads are usually made of crystal glass, although we can also use semi-precious or precious stones.

First, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and polished, after which the bead is glued on according to an adequate procedure.
